Here's how you can heal Erectile Dysfunction (ED) without medication.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is more common than you might think, and it doesn’t just affect older men. Most men experiencing ED are prescribed medication to assist their sexual health concern, with little to no exploration of other treatment methods.
At Pelvic Soul, we take a comprehensive approach to this issue, addressing both the physical and emotional factors involved in Erectile Dysfunction. This helps our male patients experiencing ED to heal without relying on medications like viagra or cialis for all their intimate health needs.
In this blog, we’ll dive into the root causes of erectile dysfunction, and explore how our treatments can help you reclaim your sexual health and confidence.
What Is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. While it’s perfectly normal to occasionally have trouble getting an erection, frequent issues could be a sign of ED. The key to healing your ED is to understand whether your concerns are caused due to a “hardware”, i.e, physical concerns, or “software”, i.e, emotional reasons, or a combination of both.
Who Can Experience Erectile Dysfunction?
ED can happen to men of all ages and backgrounds, including teenagers to those in their senior years. Factors like lifestyle & exercise patterns, stress levels, and even certain medications can play a significant role. Whether you’re a young professional working long & stressful hours, or someone hitting the gym daily for heavy weight training, you might be at risk without even realizing it.
Causes of Erectile Dysfunction
So, why does ED happen? There are two broad categories that we refer to as “hardware” and “software” issues, and in many cases, a combination of both might be to blame.
Hardware (Physical Causes)
The physical causes of ED are often related to the body’s mechanics, circulation, and overall health. Here are some of the most common “hardware” issues that could lead to erectile dysfunction:
- Poor Circulation: Blood flow is crucial for achieving an erection, and if circulation is compromised, ED can result. This is common in conditions like diabetes or heart disease. Young men who have increased pelvic muscle tension due to heavy lower body workouts, sedentary lifestyles, and anxiety may experience compromised blood flow to their penis as well.
- Medication Side Effects: Some medications, such as antidepressants or anti-hypertensives, can interfere with sexual function.
- Weak Pelvic Floor Muscles: Pelvic floor muscles play a crucial role in erectile function. Weakness in these muscles make its difficult for the penis to come to a full erection, leading to a partial or soft erection. Pelvic floor muscle weakness can also result in the inability to maintain erections for the desired amount of time.
- Tight Pelvic Floor Muscles: On the flip side, overly tight muscles can also cause problems, due to decreased erector muscle length. the decreased muscle length can cause restriction blood flow and nerve compression which may cause pain or discomfort with erection.
- Post Pelvic Surgery: Surgeries like prostatectomies or other pelvic procedures may affect nerve function or circulation in ways that lead to ED.
- Lifestyle Factors: Prolonged sitting (whether at work or home), excessive biking, lack of physical activity, poor dietary choices, alcohol, smoking, addiction to masturbation and pornography, or intense physical activities like CrossFit or heavy weight training can put excessive strain on the pelvic region.
Software (Emotional and Psychological Causes)
While the physical aspects of ED are often easier to identify, emotional and psychological factors can be just as impactful, if not more so. These are the “software” issues:
- Relationship Problems: Emotional intimacy issues can manifest physically, making it difficult to achieve or maintain an erection. Sexual intimacy inside the bedroom can be difficult without emotional intimacy outside of the bedroom.
- Stress: High levels of stress from work or personal life can throw off the body’s natural processes. Higher levels of cortisol (the body’s stress hormone) are correlated with lower levels of testosterone (the major male sex hormone involved in desire and arousal)as the body will prioritize survival over reproduction. Interestingly, this study found that exercise is a healthy form of increased stress that allows for a concurrent rise in testosterone.
- Performance Anxiety: Worrying about sexual performance can create a cycle of anxiety, leading to further erectile difficulties. Sex therapy is essential when working on being present during sexual intimacy.
- Excessive Pornography or Masturbation: In some cases, habits like porn addiction or excessive masturbation can desensitize the brain’s sexual arousal pathways, making real-life intimacy more challenging. Aggressive masturbation, especially under the influence of alcohol or drugs, may lead to pain in the penis, testicles, or pelvic region.

How Pelvic Floor Therapy Can Help Treat Erectile Dysfunction
At Pelvic Soul, we take a tailored approach to treating erectile dysfunction, based on whether the root cause is “hardware,” “software,” or a combination of both. Here’s how we can help:
Physical Treatment for "Hardware" Concerns
If your ED is due to physical issues, our treatment focuses on:
- Myofascial Release and Manual Therapy: Myofascial release is a highly effective and painless hands-on technique to release tight pelvic floor muscles, improving blood flow and reducing discomfort in the pelvis, hips, and low back. Our other painless manual therapy treatments include lymphatic drainage to reduce pelvic congestion and improve blood flow, nerve mobilizations to reduce pain caused by restrictions surrounding nerves, and visceral mobilizations to maximize abdominal and pelvic function by improving mobility of targeted organs and tissues
- Pelvic Floor Strengthening: Weak muscles? We’ll guide you through targeted exercises designed to strengthen the pelvic floor, core, and hips, enhancing your ability to maintain an erection. Kegels are not a one-size-fits-all, and they are not appropriate for all patients. Your strengthening exercises will be tailored to your specific needs.
- Postural Correction: Poor posture, particularly in the lower back and pelvic region, can affect circulation and nerve function. We work on correcting this for better overall health.
- Core Strengthening and Lifestyle Modifications: We’ll recommend adjustments to your daily activities—like limiting prolonged sitting, reducing excessive biking, or modifying your workout routine to avoid strain on the pelvic muscles.
- Assistive Devices: add info on penile rings and penis pump. To avoid injury & long term concerns, please do not use these without being trained on their usage by your pelvic floor therapist.
Emotional and Psychological Treatment for "Software" Concerns
When ED is related to emotional or psychological issues, our treatment plan might include:
- Education: We’ll teach you about the connection between the mind and body when it comes to sexual function. We will discuss the sexual response cycle, and the interplay between the nervous systems, endocrine (hormone) systems, and reproductive systems. The brain is the most powerful sex organ!
- Stress Management: Techniques like deep breathing exercises, meditation, and lifestyle changes can help reduce stress, making it easier to perform sexually. These techniques may be done throughout the day, as needed, and prior to sexual activity. We will discuss various options for stress management and choose one or two that feel most doable for you.
- Mindfulness Training: Focusing on the present moment rather than worrying about performance can help break the anxiety cycle. Noticing when you are ruminating on the past or excessively worrying about the future, then using grounding practices and mindfulness techniques to come back to the present moment, can help you be present with your sensations and with your partner.
- Somatic Experiencing: This mind-body therapy focuses on releasing stored stress and trauma within your body’s tissues that may be affecting your sexual function, especially if you have a history of physical, emotional, or sexual trauma. Unprocessed emotions will continue to have an impact on your sexual desire until they are released from the nervous system. Somatic Experiencing is a compassionate therapeutic modality to reconnect with bodily sensations in a safe, titrated, and supported way.
